While in Risalpur my husband decided to visit his parents in Rawalpindi. He took the eldest kid along.. Ashar felt left out. I comforted him by saying that he was with me to look after me. ‘Akalay ammi ko darr lagay ga’. Sometime later when I went out of my room, I found him sleeping on a chair next to my door. As I picked him up he muttered ‘Ammi ! aapko darr tou nahi lag raha, mein aapki theek hifazat kar raha hoon na”… he had been sitting by my door like a guard…
Long time back while travelling on a motorbike Athar used to sit in front of his dad and Ashar in my lap. I would put my arm around his waist to keep him from falling. Twenty years later, I was once again travelling on the motor bike with my arm around Ashar… but this time from keeping myself falling off…. strange how time changes !!!
*** After tiring from doing house chores one day, I said to my four year old daughter, ‘cant you help me in doing some work !’
‘Dont worry mom! when i will grow up i will buy you a machine. You will press a button and thak se kaam ho jai ga, thak se safai ho jai gee aur thak se kappre dhull jain ge,’…. I am still waiting for that machine.
**** While writng the thesis for his PhD, athar e mailed some material for me to read. When i went through it I found it rather difficult to understand it was surely not my cup of tea. Jokingly, i replied to him… ‘yeh tum ne kia kuch likh dala….? Athar mein ne to tumko abcd sikhai thi…’ prompt came the reply.. ‘Mom…. ghorr se dekhen..ye abcd hi hai.. only the sequence has changed….. ‘
**** During the construction of our house in Chaklala sch 3, i use to go and visit the site in the afternoon. On one such visit, khawar accompanied me. Together we went around the half built house, while coming down the stairs my foot slipped and i went crashing down the stairs, i had a terrible sprain in my back…. khawar got panicky then he looked around and held his hand for me to get up saying in a hushed tone..’ Mom..hurry get up no one has seen you..’ and i was laughing between tears of pain….
**** As a ritual, i use to bring something for the children to eat after my visit to the CSD for groceries etc. One such day, i had brought sweet fennel seeds for the children. The elder three ate their share. The youngest was eating her share, picking one or two seeds in her small fingers and putting in her mouth. One of the boys had a brilliant idea to get hold of the sister’s share. He went up to her and said..’ Mehwesh! lets play… we are your horses , when we come to you you will feed us..’….. and when i entered the room all three were on their fours acting like horses, each would come up to mehwesh, who happily fed them her share of sweet fennel seeds….
**** After getting an injection for some ailment, i said to my two year old daughter, ‘ beti mera haath daba do, dekho itna dard ho raha hai’ … ‘ daba do na werna mein ro parroon gi, ‘….. two small chubby hands fell on my arm in an attempt to press… ‘ tum lo lo ammi, ‘ …. and she turned away.
**** It was the day when the result of matric class of my younger son Ashar was due…. i had just finished saying my fajr prayers and was about to wrap up the praying mat, Athar entered the room, he was looking around as if expecting to see someone else in the room. ‘hey Mom!… plz pray for me, Ashar’s marks should be one less than mine’…. ‘ Athar,’ I said, ‘ this wont be fair’…. ‘Mom, plz one mark is not much, he should have one mark less’…. he pleaded… ‘Ok, i said, its God’s will’… he went away…. as soon as he was gone Ashar entered the room, he also came to me and said..’ Mom… u have to pray for me… i must get at least one mark more than Athar’…… (what a situation… i said to myself, both are asking for an edge over the other) …. when the result was announced…. i heard Ashar saying… ‘ aray yaar… Mom aap ne dua mein dandi maar di ‘… he had one mark less than Athar…God had upheld the seniority of the elder….
**** My father visited us when we were in Risalpur, Athar was then 4 years old. On seeing my father saying his 5- times ritual of obligatory namaz… ” Mom ! why is nana abba praying so many times in the day… only women pray like this, men pray in the mosque on friday only.” it was food for thought for my hubby??
